Course Description

This is a new syllabus and new enhanced delivery. Art is central to the human experience – it shapes our perception of the world and reflects our histories and lived experiences. But the idea of art and its value has changed over time according to social, political and technological influences. Studying art history allows us to see the past in a new light. Throughout history, art has been filled with passion, excitement, anger, joy, politics and religion.

During this module, we will explore art in Europe from the Medieval to the late 20th century. We will cover the Renaissance, Baroque Art, Neo-Classicism and Romanticism, Impressionism, and Modern and Post-modern movements. This survey offers an accessible introduction to some of the major artists and movements in art history, as well as key issues in the study of art. No prior knowledge of art history is required, and different areas of interest, opinions, and backgrounds are welcome.

Introduction to Art History: Medieval to 20th Century Art in Europe aims to inspire debate and intrigue. Taking this module will provide you with a good basic understanding of the history of European art.

It will be delivered as self-paced learning online with tutorial support. You will be asked to collate a dictionary of Terms as you work through the units, there is an online quiz, and you will be asked to undertake a Compare Contrast exercise. The course will take 100 hrs of study.
