Course Description

This short 5 credit course is 50 hours of study. Delivered as self-directed online learning with video demonstrations and individual tutorial support. Seed heads have been the inspiration for artists, ceramicists, and designers for many years and they are easily found in most gardens. This course will give you the skills to observe nature in all its beauty. It covers fine drawing techniques starting with the basics, using graphite and other dry media, to depict a variety of seed-head/pod forms, with accuracy and detail. Students will present a sketchbook of detailed drawings of seed heads using graphite and other dry media and will also look at using toned papers as well. Some botanical illustration skills like dissecting and scaling up very small subjects will also be demonstrated.
This is an ideal course for anyone undertaking field studies as well as art courses, who wish to develop their observational, drawing skills and knowledge of this varied subject.  The techniques and styles of contemporary and historical artists will also be discussed.
