Course Description

This module is designed to develop your experience of working from life by introducing you to a broad range of painting, drawing and colour theory skills whilst developing your individual strengths. Projects will cover issues from the history of the genre of Still Life from early times, through symbolism and narrative, to a contemporary view of Still Life. These are supported by tutorial support. 

  

Syllabus: 

  • The history of the genre from early Mosaics to modern day to include Vanitas, Bodegons, the Five Senses, and memento mori 
  • Modelling form, tone and texture 
  • Mapping skills 
  • Composition and negatives spaces 
  • Line drawing, mark-making 
  • Interlocking /overlapping shapes; experimentation with different surfaces 
  • Working on large and small scale 
  • Colour changes from different light sources 
  • Underlying symbolism of traditional still life's
