Course Description

This is a blended learning 10 credit module introducing students to the techniques and skills of depicting plant-life accurately and with detail from observation, by means of 7 units, and a final composition task at the end of the module. There will be demonstrations via Panopto, individual feedback & advice and group discussions to take part in. The artwork of historical and contemporary artists will be presented.
Units will start with materials, set up and using graphite for tone and then move on to fine watercolour techniques like wet into wet and dry brush, to depict various plant subjects and their textures, with some colour theory and composition. Some watercolour experience will be helpful, though not essential, but for complete beginners we do have an online, 5 credit, botanical watercolour course called ‘Fruit and Veg from the Kitchen Garden’ to cover the absolute basics.
All course content will be accessed through our online learning portal- Blackboard; you will need access to a computer, camera and be proficient in using email.
As a 10 credit module, it requires at least 100 hours of study or more, to get the full benefits from the course.
