Course Description

Tracing the history of your house can take you on a fascinating journey into the past. You can discover when and why your house was built, who has lived there over the years and what their daily lives may have been like. Don’t worry if you live in a new build! This course offers plenty of opportunities for you to research other old buildings. Maybe there is an old house in your town that you’ve always wanted to know more about, or you could research your old local pub or a row of workers’ cottages on the outskirts of your village. This course focuses primarily on British house history research. Although archives and local record offices can provide a wealth of information for those who are looking to research buildings, this course mainly focuses on digitised records, available online. Students will learn how to effectively search a number of subscription and free history websites, as well as use and interpret the electoral register, street directories, the 1939, the census and maps.
