Course Description

Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) is a technology-based approach to food production, allowing growers/food producers and agri-tech businesses to optimise growing conditions and resource usage. CEA has the potential to increase business resilience and food security in the face of factors such as climate change and land availability. This module introduces students to plant biology and looks at how general plant biology principles can be applied to controlled environments. Through a series of online lectures, guided reading and quizzes, students will look at Plant Biology:

  • Key principles of plant biology
  • Characteristics of plant physiology
  • Explore how general plant biology principles can be applied to controlled environments
  • The nature of plants to the specific constraints of CEA systems.

Those wishing to be assessed will take a Masters level quiz at the end of the module (pass-mark 70%).
