CA211 Carapace: Illustrating and Exploring the Evolution of Exoskeletons (2024/2025)

How did exoskeletons or carapaces evolve? Where do they sit on the phylogenetic table of species? What makes them different? This course will cover a variety of techniques required to accurately depict different insect forms and their specific details and colours.

How did exoskeletons or carapaces evolve? Where do they sit on the phylogenetic table of species? What makes them different?

This course will cover a variety of techniques required to accurately depict different insect forms and their specific details and colours. The artwork of historical and contemporary artists will also be discussed and analysed. Throughout the course demonstrations and group discussions, individual advice and assistance will be given. The course will cover turtles, insects and shells as well as the Fibonacci Spiral , metamorphosis, luminosity and iridescence. The techniques and styles of contemporary and historical artists will also be discussed. Demonstrations, individual advice and assistance as well as handouts will be given throughout each session. Specimens will be available to work from.
