This 3rd microcredential in the Plant Breeding set provides the knowledge that you will need to design, plan and set up a plant breeding programme. The module begins with Experimental Design, Trait Measurement & Resource Management before looking in detail at routes to commercialising a new variety.

Course Description

This course will explore:

Experimental Design, Trait Measurement & Resource Management

  • Designing and planning a nursery or field trial for the purposes of selection.
  • Preparing for times of peak activity in a breeding program and managing resources accordingly.
  • Analysing data for the purposes of selection

Commercialisation

  • The process of commercialising a crop variety in the UK, and systems elsewhere.
  • Scheduling the process of product (variety) development as an outcome from a breeding program, including the land/capital requirement for production of foundation seed/plant material.
  • Proposing how avariety is to be marketed/disseminated to farmers, including how a royalty will be collected.
  • If a new breeding program is in development, propose a short medium and long term plan for variety production and marketing.
