Food Innovation

Description

Learn how to identify technological solutions for food processing and development. Produce new and innovative products!

This module will showcase new technologies for food production and quality assessment. Students will be given examples of possible technologies with in-depth explanations through case studies on how these technologies are currently used, before looking at some ‘future technologies’ and how a business might look to invest in such early stage technologies at research stage. Examples include Biorefining, Secondary and Tertiary Fermentation and Nutrient Separation, Metabolomics and Hyperspectral Imaging, and Insect Proteins for both Human and Livestock.

This portal is for £200 deposit payments only. Full cost of the module is £1000

Grassland Systems

Description

Learn to maximise the potential of grasslands for food production and ecosystem services.

Grasslands have the potential to offer multiple ecosystem services. In addition to food production, they could reduce biodiversity loss and, as a carbon sink, help to mitigate climate change and aid the transition to zero-carbon. This module looks at the range and distribution of grassland and forage crops. Nutrient management and environmental protection are themes throughout, as are strategies for grazing and forage preservation. The role of plant breeding and management is investigated. The ecosystem services and management requirements of a range of grassland systems will be evaluated.

Horticultural Science

Description

This module will explore the underlying scientific principles that unlock the practice of sustainable horticulture. A robust understanding of these principles will prepare students with a wide range of connections to horticulture to apply a common language and fundamental knowledge base to respond to critical global challenges including climate change mitigation and adaptation, food security, halting biodiversity loss, and the transition to a zero-carbon economy within this diverse sector. It will cover the above and below ground biology and interactions that enable plant health and the micro and macro environmental strategies that can be utilised to maximise plant performance and/or ecosystem services.

Programming for Agri-technology

Description

Digital skills are increasingly important in the agrifood sector, where they are becoming essential for achieving long-term environmental and economic goals. The availability of data from a wide variety of sources from drones to weather maps, accelerometers to soil moisture sensors provides huge potential for precision solutions, however the ability to integrate these tools to provide tailored solutions is not in everyone’s toolkit.

This introductory course on programming for agritech will delve into the foundational principles of programming and computational logic essential for navigating the dynamic landscape of agricultural technology. Whether you're a novice or have some prior experience, this course is designed to equip you with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills necessary to design and build your own programme to integrate agritech tools into useful systems.
