Course Description

This practical course provides an introduction to figurative sculpture through the versatile medium of ceramics. Learners will explore the human figure as a source of inspiration, developing observational and creative skills through drawing and sculpting directly from a life model. Beginning with studies from observation, students will investigate form, proportion, gesture, and structure, using these insights to create original sculptural works inspired by the figure. Through experimentation and personal interpretation, learners will develop ideas from initial sketches and maquettes to fully realised ceramic sculptures. The course encourages engagement with the work of historical and contemporary figurative sculptors, ceramic artists, and makers, providing a broader understanding of artistic approaches to representing the human form. References to both traditional and contemporary practices will support the development of individual creative responses.

Figurative Sculpture Ceramics can be studied as a stand-alone course and it is a key course for the Certificate of Higher Education in Art and Design at Aberystwyth University.
