2025 marks the 250th anniversary of one of the greatest novelists in the English language – Jane Austen. This course will introduce students to each of Austen’s novels in turn.

Course Description

2025 marks the 250th anniversary of one of the greatest novelists in the English language – Jane Austen. This course will introduce students to each of Austen’s novels in turn. It will focus on formal aspects of Austen’s writing, such as characterization and dialogue, as well as broader themes such as her approach to gender and social roles. Through guided reading and group discussion, students will be introduced to different critical approaches to Austen’s work. We will also explore the historical background to Austen’s novels and the ways in which her reputation has changed over time. Students will also be encouraged to produce their own responses to Austen’s novels through a variety of written assignments.
