Course Description

Wales is very fortunate in having several world class peatland sites plus considerable upland areas covered in blanket peat, a rarity away from the western seaboard of northern Europe. After defining what peat is, this course will set Welsh peatlands in a worldwide context before examining the types of peatlands we have in Wales, from the international important raised bogs such as Cors Fochno (which we will look at in more detail) to quaking bogs, fens, not forgetting pingos! We will cover the physical, social, and biological history of peatlands together with their ecology, legal protection and their conservation, together with keeping you up to date on what is currently happening on the peatland “scene”.
